Bill Wins at the American Quail Classic - 2011
FORT CAMPBELL, KY. — The American Quail Classic was contested December 17-18 at Fort Campbell Military Reservation Outdoor Recreation Area located northwest of Clarksville, Tenn. We thank our military for keeping our country safe and allowing us to share these magnificent training grounds with our troops.
The 2011 winner is Survivor’s Little Bill, pointer male owned by Blake Kukar of Dancyville, Tenn., and handled by Randy Downs. Bill ran a big forward race in the 6th brace on a nice afternoon with temperatures in the 40s after a cool frosty morning. Birds seemed to be moving that afternoon. All three braces that afternoon had bird work on wild birds (we are not allowed to release birds on the Fort Campbell grounds). Bill was found pointing by scout Mark Haynes on the far side of the long hay field which has become mostly bromesage over the years. Bill had a large covey pinned on the edge in a thicket. His manners were excellent while Downs flushed and at the shot.

Bill Gets Invited to the Open All Age Invitational
Survivor’s Little Bill, owned by Blake Kukar and handled by Randy Downs, came to the Championship with the sixth highest number of points toward qualification. Kukar rode in the gallery to watch his pointer perform. Bill had placed first in both the Missouri Open All-Age and the North Dakota Open All-Age Classic, together with earning runner-up at the Alabama Open All-Age Championship, and placing third at the Fitch Farms-Galena Plantation Open Trial. Bill had three finds — at 32, 43 and 46 — in the first brace on the first day and had one find at 45 during the terrible weather of the last brace on the second day. Those birds were flushed by Ike Todd as neither Downs nor his scout was on hand at the time of the find. Kukar was proud of his fine pointer’s performance both days.

Survivor's Little Bill wins the Prairie Open All Age National Qualifier.
Survivor’s Little Bill, owned by Blake Kukar of Somerville, Tenn., and handled by Randy Downs, was named winner of the All-Age Stake. Bill was drawn in the 17th brace with Whippoorwill Blue Blood (Huffman). They were released just past the Cuffawa bottom. They showed well throughout the next long bottom as they headed toward Highway 4. Once through Kate’s bottom both were pointed out ahead alongside Highway 4. Blue Blood was found pointing as we headed away from Highway 4; Bill was backing. When the birds were flushed, one landed on a nearby tree limb; this was too much for Blue Blood.
Bill was taken on and hunted the country intelligently and maturely as we headed to the Edwards farm. Throughout the Edwards farm several nice casts were made. As we came off the Edwards farm he had a nice stand at 30. As Bill crossed the Cuffawa he made a nice cast along the north edge of the field headed toward the bicolor hill. Again pointed out making a nice cast headed as we came off bicolor hill he was found pointed on the southwest corner. Birds were difficult to flush as they were running through the thick cover. Everything was accomplished in good order at 54. Bill was turned loose, handler pointed the dog out as he went toward the horseshoe field near time. As the judge ordered the dog up his handler rode to look for Bill. He was found in the horseshoe field pointed. The third and last covey was flushed, all in good order. Everyone knew at that point that a new standard had been set with a good performance in the heat with three nice finds and a back.

Although we did have birds pointed in the Derby, the winners were placed on the quality races and the potential they exhibited.
